Cruising & College Fjord

A relaxing last day of cruising and relaxing. Unfortunately, Mike has a head cold, so we are doping him up with a bit of everything  and I’m Lysoling our stateroom.

As one of our captains said...cue the Titanic music...some of these icebergs are really and big and we can't see how deep

Even with a cold, he was out there taking it all in...

Dall dolphins that look like mini orcas

In late afternoon, We finished our packing and headed to the balcony to enjoy the cruise into College Fjord. The wilds didn’t disappoint with a pod of dolphins and more cute sea otters along with more pristine  glaciers and snow capped mountains glistening in sparkling sunshine. Spectacular!!!

Another otter doing his back float

They are dirty because of their constant movement over land, forward and back

We are close enough to hear the Harvard Glacier’s “thunder like” sound of it calving. We love all the glacier color striations. Definitely, some of the largest icebergs we have seen thus far just cruising past our ship.

We got to talking about our outlaw, Bill Norin who served with the Coast Guard up in these cold waters and even further North. WOW! Great sites,  but I can only imagine how cold and bitter it must be in the winter. Yikes!

We enjoyed our British Pub lunch before Mike left to read and relax in the room and myself to listen to Jame’s, the talented Australian, acoustic guitar player.

Mike commented that much of the snow we are seeing has probably been here since before Christ or even before our recorded history. Hard to wrap one’s mind around!

A Fjord is a Norwegian term for a narrow inlet surrounded by mountains and saltwater with a U shape. Many of the higher mountains around here are 6,000- 12,000 feet high. We just saw a sea otter jump off a large iceberg as the ship got closer to it. We could see the bright pink fireweed up on the lower green mountains. It’s also amazing how the water changes colors as the tidal glacier drains into the saltwater. It’s like someone poured titanium white paint into the blue creating a milky gray-blue effect.
